FACTS ABOUT GILGIT-BALTISTAN:

Gilgit-Baltistan are spread over an area of 72,496 Sq.Kms with population of more than 870.347. It consists of six Districts namely Gilgit, Skardu, Diamer, Ghizer Ghanche and Astore  with  Gilgit, Baltistan ( Skardu) Diamer,, Ghizer, Ghanche and Astore, a land God  gifted  with a rich and diverse  Flora & Fauna. The  area  having largest mountain ranges, like Himalaya, the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush with  snow-clad high peaks ranging from 1000 to over 8000. The mighty  K-2 28,250 fts. 8511 meters, the second highest after mount Everest. Couple with Broad Peak (8047, Gasherbrum-I (8068) and Gasherbrum-II (8035), Gasherbrum-II (7952) are also challenge for the climbers world over.

There are enormous proportions of glaciers in Gilgit Baltistan, the largest one is Siachen Glacier about 72 Kms, others;  Hisper-61, Biafo-60, Batura-64.
 
Strategicaly area is very important with very very interesting topography.  Its typical customs, regional folk dances sports and famous Polo played in these area is totally different with rest of the world. There are Shias, Sunni, Ismailies and Nurkakhshies living here with tolerance and harmony. The area has been attractions for local and foreign tourists and mountaineers around the world.

Gilgi-Baltistan Self-Empowerment and Self-Governance Order, 2009: Well, the area was given this package in which a new provincial like setup approved by Federal Cabinet and announced by the Prime Minister of Pakistan on August 29, 2009. However, it is not declared as Province of Pakistan yet. In the new setup Prime Minister of Pakistan will be the Chairman of gilgit-Baltistan Council with its 15 members. Provincial like autonomy Order is called "GILGIT-BALTISTAN SLEF-EMPOWERMENT AND SELF-GOVERNANCE ORDER 2009" The area will have its own Governor (present Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan is Pir Syed Karam Ali Shah) and a Chief Minister (Syed Mehdi Shah, present Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan) elected by the Legislative Assembly of Gilgit Baltistan consisting of 33 (24 members as direct while 3 from Technocrats and 6 reserved for women seats). The Order also includes creation of a new District consisting of Hunza and Nagar. There is a Gilgit Baltistan Council setup in Islamabad having its members /advisor with a chair as Prime Minister.

Diamer Bhasha Dam is also Located in Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamer District) and being constructed here which is expected to produce 4,500 MW electricity with the capacity of storing over 8 million acre feet of water which is presently being wasted due to not having any reserviour for this precious water. This Dam would cost  about 12 billion US$ on its construction.
